The job title Network Manager carries the responsibility for the health and operations of a company’s network. Because most businesses rely on their networking capability all the time, twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, these managers must be flexible to provide support for both planned and unplanned outages. Depending on the size of the company and its networking, this could be a high-level oversight and management role, or one with more direct intervention and hands-on responsibilities.

Network Managers often move into a position of Network Architect, Project Manager or Information Technology Director, where responsibilities and salaries are greater.

Job Description: What Does a Network Manager Do?

A network manager builds and maintains data communication networks – Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs) including both wired and wireless. He or she ensures that all parts of a company’s network of computers are functioning properly and they may have the added responsibility for intranets and interfaces to the web.

The Network Manager must manage all changes in the network, including equipment installation, software upgrades and patching to minimize disruption of business operations. In cases of a failure, they must respond very quickly to diagnose and execute repairs to shorten the downtime. Malware and other attacks against the communications infrastructure are constantly monitored.

For most of the time, in the absence of outages and breakage, they use the best tools to monitor traffic and make the adjustments to optimize the network. Ongoing education keeps their skills fresh for the constant advances in the technology. They may also control access to the network, defining access policy and granting credentials to users.

Network Manager Job Responsibilities and Duties

A Network Manager is responsible to perform, or delegate, some or all of the following:

  • Manage installation of all network equipment, software and data circuits.
  • Schedule the installation of firmware patches and updates to all network devices and software.
  • Monitor the network performance.
  • Troubleshoot all network failures or problems, and then identify and execute steps for resolution.
  • Ensure that proper change control is defined and maintained for all network changes.
  • Troubleshoot network security problems and execute remedial actions.
  • Manage scheduled back-ups.
  • Set access rights policy and manage permissions as required by the business.
  • Identify actual or attempted network security breaches.
  • Identify the causes of networking problems, using diagnostic testing software and equipment.
  • Provide proper, accessible documentation for the network architecture, including any changes and support activities.
  • Maintain a current inventory of network hardware and software components and support contract documentation.
